7 Plus Academic Testing and Assessment
Understanding through 7 Plus academic testing where your child stands academically is essential when preparing for the 7 Plus exam. Testing provides clarity on two critical questions: does your child have the academic potential to succeed at a competitive school, and where are they currently in terms of curriculum knowledge? Our academic testing gives you the data and guidance you need to make informed decisions about which schools to target and how to structure your preparation.
We offer two types of academic testing: Aptitude Testing to measure innate potential, and Baseline Testing to assess current curriculum attainment. Both provide standardised scores and detailed reports, and we interpret these results in the context of school entrance requirements so you know exactly what they mean for your child’s chances.
Academic Potential Testing
Our Aptitude Testing measures a child’s innate academic potential and current level of attainment. This testing is conducted in partnership with Cambridge University and provides standardised scores that we can benchmark against the requirements of specific schools. The tests assess both potential (how much academic ability your child has) and attainment (how much they currently know).
This testing is particularly valuable if you are unsure whether the 7 Plus is right for your child, or if you are deciding which schools to target. While the raw data is presented as standardised scores, we know what those scores mean for school entrance chances at different schools and can guide you accordingly. For instance, a child with strong potential scores but lower attainment scores may need intensive curriculum work, whereas a child with strong attainment but lower potential scores may be working at their ceiling.
The tests can be done from Year 1 onwards and are completed at home online with parental support. You receive a detailed report with standardised scores and a consultation with us to discuss the results and what they mean for your preparation strategy. Aptitude Testing costs £500.
Baseline Testing
Our Baseline Testing assesses exactly where your child sits in terms of curriculum acquisition. Bear in mind that significant curriculum acceleration is needed for the 7 Plus exam — children typically need to be one to two years ahead of the National Curriculum. Baseline Testing tells you precisely where your child is now and what gaps need to be filled.
We have Baseline Tests prepared by a Headmistress of an academically selective pre-prep for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children. These tests are conducted in our centres in Dulwich, Chelsea or Hampstead with the support of one of our teachers. This removes exam pressure and allows us to understand exactly what your child knows. We can see not just what answers they give, but how they approach problems and where their thinking breaks down.
The results drive your educational journey with us. We provide detailed feedback on your child’s performance and give you a clear action plan for what needs to be covered in which order. This ensures that tutoring time is used efficiently and focused on the areas that will make the biggest difference. Baseline Testing costs £500.
Which 7 Plus Academic Testing Should You Choose?
If you are at the beginning of your 7 Plus journey and unsure whether your child should attempt competitive school entrance, start with Aptitude Testing. This will tell you whether your child has the academic potential to succeed and which schools are realistic targets.
If you have already decided to pursue the 7 Plus and want to know where to focus your preparation efforts, Baseline Testing is the right choice. This gives you a granular understanding of curriculum gaps and creates a roadmap for tutoring.
Many families benefit from both tests at different stages: Aptitude Testing early in Reception or Year 1 to guide school selection, followed by Baseline Testing in Year 1 or early Year 2 to structure the final preparation phase.
