Post 4 Plus Programme: Learning to Read and Excel in Maths

Our Post 4 Plus Programme keeps your child ahead

Our Post 4 Plus Programme helps children get ahead academically before they start reception. This is a more formally academic programme than our 4 Plus preparation work, focusing on reading, writing and mathematics in an age-appropriate but accelerated way. It’s designed for ambitious families who want their child to arrive in reception confident, ahead of the curriculum, and ready to thrive at a selective school.

Who Is This Programme For?

This programme serves two groups of families:

Children Who Have Passed the 4 Plus

Many of our 4 Plus students continue with us after receiving their school offers. These children have built strong relationships with our teachers and parents want to maintain the momentum of accelerated learning. Starting at a selective school like Westminster, Alleyn’s or Highgate means being surrounded by other high-achieving children. Arriving in reception already reading independently and confident in mathematics gives your child a crucial head start and helps them feel like they belong from day one.

Children Preparing for the 7 Plus

For children who did not receive a 4 Plus offer, this programme provides an excellent foundation for the 7 Plus. Getting ahead academically in reception and Year 1 puts your child in a stronger position when it’s time to prepare for the 7 Plus assessment. Early reading fluency and mathematical confidence are significant advantages when the formal 7 Plus preparation begins.

What Does the Post 4 Plus Programme Cover?

The programme is built around two core academic pillars:

Reading and Literacy

We aim to develop independent readers by the end of reception — a level significantly ahead of the typical curriculum. Children learn systematic phonics, blending, decoding and comprehension skills. Reading fluency unlocks everything else academically, and children who read confidently early develop a genuine love of learning. This is an ambitious but achievable goal with the right teaching approach.

Mathematics and Numeracy

We cover the entire reception mathematics curriculum before children start reception. This means they arrive in their new school already confident with number bonds, counting, simple addition and subtraction, and early problem-solving. Children who believe they are good at mathematics perform well in mathematics — early confidence creates a positive feedback loop that carries through their entire academic career. By giving your child mastery of reception-level maths before they arrive, we set them up for long-term success.

Our Teaching Approach

While this programme is more overtly academic than our 4 Plus behavioural work, it remains completely age-appropriate. Sessions are engaging, interactive and fun — children enjoy attending and look forward to their lessons. Our teachers are experts in early years academic acceleration and know exactly how to challenge young children without creating stress or pressure. The shift from behavioural development to academic content is gradual and natural, building on the strong foundations established in our 4 Plus programme.

Why Our Post 4 Plus Programme Works

The benefits of starting reception academically ahead are substantial:

  • Confidence from day one. Children who already know the material feel secure and capable in their new environment.
  • More time for enrichment. When core academic work feels easy, children can explore creative subjects, sports and hobbies without academic pressure.
  • Stronger 7 Plus foundation. For families targeting the 7 Plus, early academic strength creates a significant advantage when formal exam preparation begins.
  • Positive academic identity. Children who experience early academic success develop the belief that they are capable learners — this mindset shapes their entire educational journey.
  • Continuity with trusted teachers. For children continuing from our 4 Plus programme, staying with the same teachers provides stability and continuity during a period of transition.
